Congrats to the winning homerooms for the Black History Month Door Decorating Contest at the O'Donnell Middle School! Winners of the contest were rewarded with a pizza lunch before February vacation. Congratulations to grade 6 winners in Mrs. Dailey’s homeroom for their depiction of Shirley Chisholm, grade 7 winners in Ms. Diabate’s homeroom for honoring Maya Angelou, and grade 8 winners in Mrs. Murphy’s homeroom for their portrayal of Brown v. Board of Education. Special thanks to John P. Russell Insurance Agency in Stoughton for providing the delicious pizzas! SHS freshman Angie Berry, pictured here with coach Helfrich, competed at the MIAA Girls State Wrestling Tournament over February vacation. Coach Helfrich writes, "A three sport athlete, Angie took on the difficult trek of representing Stoughton's Black Knights as a freshman in New England's biggest girl's tournament. She pulled off an impressive major victory at the event. We are very proud of Angie for her growth during the season, and are excited to see where her career takes her. Angie represents a landmark development for Stoughton Wrestling, and of the fastest growing sport for women in Massachusetts. Women's wrestling is quickly growing in popularity across the state, and we hope that this inspires more young men and women to consider an exciting, character building sport”.

High school football teams across the state started practicing Friday, August 20, gearing up for the upcoming fall sports season. Stoughton High held its first practice on the turf field on Friday. Here are some pictures of the Black Knights in action 🏈 🔨 The other fall sports teams start practicing the week of August 23.

August 16 marked the start of SHS Marching Band Camp! Over the next two weeks, students will be preparing for the upcoming competition season. The theme of this year’s show is “New York, New York,” featuring the music of Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, Billy Joel, Alicia Keys and Jay Z!

Bus postcards were mailed out on Friday, August 13 and families should be receiving them this week (the week of August 16). Students will need to show the postcard to the bus drivers when they board the bus.

At the Wilkins, our third grade life cycle studies include learning about the process in which eggs become butterflies with hands on learning, as they grow butterflies in their classroom. The butterflies have emerged from their chyrsalis and pupa stage, and the third graders get to enjoy watching their butterflies get strong before they release them. Projects demonstrating their understanding of the butterfly life cycle line the halls outside their classroom so the rest of the school can learn about it too.

Yesterday, kindergarten students from Mrs. Faria's classroom at the Wilkins School released their butterflies. Students learned about the lifecycle of a butterfly and were able to observe the transformation of their caterpillars to butterflies in their classroom. Students were sad to see their "class pets" go but happy that they were released into their natural habitat.

At the Wilkins, our third grade classrooms have been busy learning about the life cycle. A few weeks ago, third grade started hosting eggs in an incubator, and this week the eggs started hatching. Many of the chicks have already born, and they are so adorable. In the photo with the eggs in the incubator you can see a chick is just about ready to hatch, the shell is mostly broken. Our chicks will stay at the Wilkins a little longer before they move on to their new home.

At the Jones School Ms. Porder's class's butterfly studies and projects incorporate The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. The children did a wonderful job painting bright and colorful images from the book of all the foods the caterpillar takes a bite out of on its journey to become a butterfly This artwork line the halls outside of the classroom.

There is a lot of buzz about butterflies here at the Jones! Many of our classrooms are learning about butterflies with a variety of approaches. In Mrs. Velozo's classroom, in addition to watching the metamorphosis into adult butterfly from egg right in their own classroom, they have many butterfly stories to choose from and create hands-on butterfly art projects.
